The Letter I’ll Never Send Back

Woman sitting on a bed writing in her journal in soft morning light

Hey,

I read your silence like scripture.
Every pause. Every space between words.
The moments you didn’t reply said more than the ones when you did.

You never had to tell me who you were.
I saw it.
In the way you held back when things got too close.
In how you used sarcasm like armor.
And how you offered just enough of yourself to keep me near — but never enough for me to feel held.

I wanted to reach you.
Not to fix you.
But to meet you, exactly where you were.

And for a while, I did.

I stayed patient. I stayed kind.
I swallowed the ache that came with every unanswered question, every unmet need.
I told myself your crumbs were connection, too.

But I’m not proud of that.
Because somewhere along the way, I stopped asking what I needed.

The truth?
I never needed you to be perfect.
I just needed you to be real.

To say, “I don’t know how to do this — but I want to try.”
To let me in, even if only a little.
To ask how I was doing.

But you didn’t.
And I know now — maybe you couldn’t.

I’m not angry.
I’m not bitter.
But I am done hoping you’ll become someone different.

This isn’t revenge.
This is release.

I’ve learned that love isn’t about losing myself just to hold onto someone else.

So I’m walking away quietly — not out of spite, but out of self-respect.
With my heart intact, and my hands finally free.

And if you ever wonder why I stopped showing up…

It’s because I realized I deserved someone who would show up too.
