Families often create invisible roles — the lost child, the scapegoat, the golden child. These roles shape us in ways we may not recognize until much later in life. When we finally step back and see them clearly, it can feel both heartbreaking and healing.
This letter is one I wrote to my sister — not to the role she was given, but to the person she truly is. It’s a recognition of what was lost, what went unseen, and what deserves to be reclaimed.
I see you.
For so long, you’ve been the one overlooked, the one on the sidelines while the noise of the family carried on. You were quiet, you were strong, you were “fine” — so everyone assumed you didn’t need to be held, protected, or chosen. But I know the truth. I know you were invisible in a family that only saw what it wanted to see.
I see how hard it was to always feel like the outsider, even among your own siblings. I see the pain of being left behind, the neglect disguised as “you’re independent,” the way your light was dimmed because no one bothered to really look. I see the years you had to survive without anyone saying, “You matter.”
We are different — in so many ways, even opposites — but maybe that’s why I see you so clearly. You shine in places I never could, and now I realize how often that light went unnoticed. That’s why I’m writing this: so you’ll never mistake silence for not being seen.
In a family like ours, we were each given roles we never asked for — you as the Lost Child, me as the Scapegoat. Those labels tried to define us, but they don’t have to anymore. What matters now is that we see each other clearly, beyond the roles, beyond the silence. From here forward, I choose to keep seeing you.
I love you.
If you’ve lived inside a family system like this, you may recognize yourself or someone you love in these words. The roles we were given are not the truth of who we are. Healing begins when we step outside of them, when we choose to see — and be seen — for who we really are.
