I Come First—And That’s Not Selfish, It’s Sacred

Woman sitting on the beach with her arm wrapped around a dog, looking out at the ocean.

There was a time when putting someone else first felt like love. When I thought loyalty meant self-sacrifice. When I believed that staying small was safer than being misunderstood.

But I know better now.

This chapter of my life has been about remembering who I am underneath all the performance. The masks. The over-apologizing. The chasing. The hoping they’d just meet me halfway. I was stretching myself so thin trying to be enough, for everyone—except me.

Not anymore.

I choose me. Not as an act of defiance. But as a return. A sacred homecoming.
Because sovereignty means I belong to myself first—and I honor that above all. I can’t pour love from a cracked foundation. I can’t be in partnership if I’m disappearing inside it.

So yes, I told him—I come first.

Not to hurt him. Not to push him away. But to stay with myself.

If someone sees that as selfish, then maybe they never saw the weight I was carrying in the first place. The emotional labor. The unspoken caretaking. The way I twisted myself to avoid rocking the boat.

But I am not a boat stabilizer. I am not a fixer. I am not a balm for someone else’s unresolved pain.

I am a woman who knows her worth.

And if I have to choose between losing myself or disappointing someone else, I will choose me every single time.

Because my peace is precious. My boundaries are sacred. My voice is mine to keep.

The kind of love I want can hold that. And if it can’t, then it isn’t love.

This isn’t a warning. It’s a truth. This is who I am now. And she’s not going anywhere.
