It hit me hard. That release.
Not a scream. Not a sob. Just this quiet, uncontrollable unraveling. Like my body had been holding something ancient and holy, and it finally exhaled. My shoulders dropped. My breath slowed. My nervous system whispered, “You’re safe now.”
But my mind? Oh, she didn’t get the memo.
She stayed busy.
Analyzing. Spinning. Replaying the moments that led to the collapse.
For days, weeks even, I felt it: the exhaustion that doesn’t come from lack of sleep, but from the weight of everything I hadn’t said. Everything I didn’t know how to make peace with.
My body released the storm. But my thoughts kept looking for the wreckage.
I tried to be gentle. I gave myself rest, naps, quiet mornings. And still, there was this underlying ache in my mind. Like she was scared to fully let go. Like she needed a reason for what just happened.
It’s strange how healing works. You think the hard part is over once the crying stops, once the shaking subsides, once you feel that spacious breath return to your chest. But then comes the mind.
The mind, with her need for meaning. For clarity. For certainty. The mind that begs, “Was that real? What did it fix? Am I healed now?”
I’ve come to understand this: the mind is the last to regulate.
The body speaks first. The nervous system recalibrates. The soul exhales. And then the mind, slowly, eventually, catches up.
She is not the villain. She is the last responder.
And she is afraid.
So I don’t rush her anymore. I let her ask her questions. I journal. I walk. I breathe into the silence.
I remind her: “You don’t have to understand to be free. You don’t have to know the why to feel the release. You don’t have to make sense of it. You just have to let it be real.”
This is what it means to heal slowly. This is what it means to be human.
To hold both the letting go and the not-quite-there-yet.
To be the body and the mind and the soul
— all on their own timelines, and still somehow miraculously whole.
